Studying requires a certain amount of memorization and there are many nootropics that specifically work to improve your how your brain makes new memories and enhances your memory recall.

If memory enhancement is your goal, then you want to be using a nootropic that targets your neural plasticity; the function that allows your brain cells and neurons to form new connections. As your neural plasticity improves you will notice that your ability to learn, retain and recall information becomes significantly better.

It's worth noting that while many of these nootropics work great individually, a well devised stack can give you even better results. Below is an outline of a nootropic stack for studying that will enhance your memory.

Adrafinil For Studying

Benefits

Also known as Olmifon, Adrafinil is a water soluble nootropic that improves your memory by stimulating your glutamate receptors. These receptors are responsible for synapse in your brain. The better your synapse, the higher your memory performance will be.

#2: Nootropic Stack For Studying: Focus, Energy & Concentration

There is no substitute for getting a good night's sleep, eating healthy and exercising. Living an all around healthy lifestyle will naturally provide you with the focus, energy and the ability to learn that you need when it comes to studying.

But for those times when you simply aren't getting enough rest, can't channel an ounce of focus or need a little more concentration, we've got a nootropric stack for that.

L-Theanine for Studying

Benefits

When it comes to nootropic stacks for studying, l-theanine is a must-have. This powerful nootropic helps put your body and mind in a more relaxed state so you can focus on the task at hand. It's almost like being in a meditative state of concentration. It also happens to be perfect for catching a few more zzz's when you take it right before bedtime.

Dosage

The recommended daily dose for l-theanine is 100-200 mg. It is always best to start at a lower dosage and work your way up from there to see how your body reacts.

Some users have found that when paired with caffeine, they will use between 300-400 mg of L-theanine. Again, we recommend starting at the lowest dosage and adjusting over time.

Caffeine for Studying

Benefits

To get the most focus and concentration out of this nootropic stack for studying, you're going to want to pair your l-theanine with a dose of caffeine.

Caffeine is one of the most common energy boosting tools we use on a daily basis (espresso, anyone!) and is not technically a nootropic because it is a stimulant. That being said, there is plenty of scientific research proving its ability to improve mental performance and cognitive functioning.

When paired with l-theanine, caffeine helps round out the benefits of L-theanine by reducing any sleepy side effects. It also doesn't give you the jittery side effects of just taking caffeine on its own.

Dosage

The recommended daily dose of caffeine is between 100-200 mg for adults. Many of us have built up a tolerance to its effects with regular coffee consumption, and may be tempted to increase that dosage.

For the purposes of using this stack for studying, studies have found that the best ratio of caffeine to l-theanine is 1 part caffeine to 2 parts l-theanine. For example, 100 mg caffeine and 200 mg l-theanine.

The Ultimate Hackers Guide To Adrafinil

The Ultimate Hackers Guide To Adrafinil

Adrafinil: The Ultimate Guide

Shop Now from AbsorbYourHealth.com

Adrafinil is a common nootropic used to increase your level of alertness and wakefulness. Though it possesses stimulant qualities, it does not create hyperactivity in the body, rather it fends off sleepiness.

There is much that is unknown about Adrafinil still, but below you will find a detailed report of what we do know, and how you can benefit from it.

Quick Facts

Adrafinil is also known as Olmifon or CRL-40028.

It is most often confused with Modafinil, though they are not the same. Adrafinil is however, a prodrug for Modafinil, which means if you take Adrafinil it will be metabolized in the liver and cause higher concentrations of Modafinil in your body.

Nootropics similar to Adrafinil include Verapamil, Butorphanol, Ketorolac Ophthalmic and Nystatin.

Adrafinil is banned by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) as it has been classified as a non specific stimulant (1).

Adrafinil Dosage

Standard dosage

The recommended dosage varies between 600-1200 mg daily, taken orally. As with all nootropics and supplements, it is always best to start with the lowest possible dose to see how your body reacts.

When To Take Adrafinil

Due to the fact that Adrafinil increases alertness, the best time to take Adrafinil is the morning on an empty stomach.

Some users prefer to split their dosage and take half upon waking and another half before lunch time. It is not recommended to take adrafinil in the afternoon or evening as it will impair your ability to sleep.

How Long Does Adrafinil Take To Work?

Most users begin to feel the effects of adrafinil 60-90 minutes after ingesting it, as it needs this time to become absorbed in your system and metabolized by the liver.

The typical peak time for performance is between hours 2-4 after ingestion, meaning you will likely feel your most alert and focused 2-4 hours after taking it. In this case, if you are planning on using adrafinil for studying or in-class focus, you will want to take it 1-2 hours prior.

How Long Does Adrafinil Last?

Studies show that the Adrafinil half-life is 1 hour in humans, however this is fairly misleading. Adrafinil is metabolized in the liver and is converted into modafinil, and the half life of modafinil is 15 hours. Simply put, you could feel the therapeutic effects of adrafinil all day long just from one dose.

Cycling Adrafinil

As with many nootropics, they should not be taken for uninterrupted extended periods of time. Instead, you should consider cycling it.

In addition to preventing negative side effects, cycling also reduces the odds of your body becoming immune to its effects.

An example of cycling would be to use it for 3 times per week for two weeks, followed by one week off. After your one week off, take it 3 times per week for one week, followed by two weeks off and repeat.
Adrafinil should not be taken for longer than 5 months in a row.

The Science Behind Adrafinil

What Is Adrafinil?

Adrafinil is a synthetic substance not found in the body or nature. It is a compound comprised of diphenylmethyl sulfinyl-2 acetohydroxamic acid, which is commonly used to promote wakefulness and improved alertness, making it a eugregoric agent.

It is most commonly known by its brand name Olmifon.

How Does Adrafinil Work?

As we mentioned above, there is much to be learned about Adrafinil and it is not fully understood how it works. That being said, adrafinil appears to mimic the chemical response that causes our body to go into “fight or flight” mode by increasing your body’s production of hypocretin.

Hypocretin is a neurotransmitter responsible for making you feel awake and alert. In fact, narcolepsy (condition that causes you to fall asleep easily) is caused by a lack of hypocretin in the brain.

As adrafinil increases your levels of hypocretin, it also leads your body to produce other hormones and neurotransmitters that affect your mental and physical energy levels, such as dopamine, norepinephrine and histamine.

Adrafinil also works to modulate Glutamate receptors, which is one of the reasons people use this nootropic for improving their cognitive functionality.

Glutamate is essential for improving memory, creating better neuronal communication and enhanced cognitive performance, and adrafinil works by inhibiting the breakdown of this important amino acid.

How Is Adrafinil Metabolized & Eliminated?

Adrafinil — when taken orally, as prescribed — is metabolized in the liver where it turns into modafinilic acid or modafinil sulfone. These metabolites form a modified version of modafinil.

Adrafinil is eliminated through plasma and urine, though it appears to go faster through plasma. As it is found in both places, it is easy to detect. It also happens to be a banned substance by the WADA, so if you are an athlete who undergoes regular drug testing, you should not use Adrafinil.

Is Adrafinil Safe To Use?

While there are not too many negative side effects, there are some notable Adrafinil side effects that you may want to take into consideration before using it.

Some users have experienced headaches, dizziness or stomach issues like nausea or discomfort.

With long term use, you may be putting your liver in danger. Adrafinil causes a buildup of enzymes in your liver and when used in higher dosages for long periods of time, you risk reducing the function of your liver.

Who Uses Adrafinil?

Adrafinil is a common nootropic used by students who are looking for a burst in energy to stay on top of their studies, especially during exam periods. As its primary function is to increase wakefulness, it could be beneficial for individuals on shift work or working nights.
This nootropic is not recommended for athletes as it is banned by WADA.

Clinical Studies On Adrafinil

There have not been too many studies on the effects of adrafinil as a nootropic, however there have been some clinical research into its effects on orofacial dyskinesia (involuntary movements of the face and mouth, sometimes found in patients with Parkinson’s Disease).

One study found (2) that by using 900 mg of Adrafinil each day for a period of 10 months led to orofacial dyskinesia. It was also found that even after a 4 month withdrawal period, subjects were still experiencing abnormal facial movements.

Where To Buy Adrafinil

Firstly I don't want you to fall into this trap… there is speculation that Cerebral Health is selling fake Adrafinil powder, as noted on Reddit.

Several people claim that not only did their adrafinil look and smell different (which is weird), but they literally experienced no any effects after taking it for an extended period of time.

I personally get mine here from AbsorbYourHealth.com and have only experienced quality effects.

Common Stacks Used with Adrafinil

Noopept And Adrafinil Stack

If you are looking for enhanced focus, memory and wakefulness, then this stack is for you. When used together appropriately, noopept and adrafinil compliment each other nicely.

To use this stack, take 10-30 mg of Noopept 3 times daily. Take 150 mg of Adrafinil first thing in the morning with your first dose of Noopept.
Whatever you do, do not take any additional adrafinil or you will impair your sleeping.

Adrafinil And Caffeine Stack

Caffeine is a well known stimulant and one that is most commonly used, but a lot of us drink so many cups of joe that we build up a tolerance. By mixing caffeine and adrafinil you can experience similar or better results.

To stack together, take 200-300 mg of Adrafinil first thing in the morning and either have a cup of coffee or 200 mg of caffeine supplement.

You might think using them together is redundant, but their purposes and effects are slightly different. Adrafinil works to create wakefulness, while caffeine (an adenosine competitive inhibitor) works to prevent sleepiness.

Note — be sure to drink plenty of water or you may experience severe headaches, dizzy spells or diarrhea.

The Ultimate Adrafinil Stack for Studying

Adrafinil is very effective on its own, but can be stacked with several other nootropics to create the ultimate nootropic stack for studying.*

If you need to pull an all nighter during exam time or before a big project is due, then try mixing the following nootropics together:

  • Adrafinil — for wakefulness (use approximately 150 mg**)
  • Caffeine — to reduce sleepiness (use approximately 150 mg**)
  • Pramiracetam — for improved choline uptake and enhanced memory recall (use approximately 100 mg**)
  • L-Theanine — to reduce stress and anxiety for a relaxed study session (use approximately 50 mg**)

*This is not recommended for new nootropic users.

** Recommend using lower dosages and tweaking over time as you find what works best for you and your body

Adrafinil may not be for everyone. As we mentioned, it is a derivative of Modafinil which has been found to be a much more reliable and tested nootropic. That being said, when used properly or stacked with other cognitive and energy enhancing nootropics, the benefits of adrafinil are plentiful.

Depending on your needs and desired outcomes, you may experience periods of great focus and alertness, but you may also experience negative side effects such as headaches or dizziness. As with any nootropic, start with the lowest recommended dosage and see how your body reacts.

10 Best Nootropics for Studying Plus a Surefire Study Stack (scroll to the bottom)

10 Best Nootropics for Studying Plus a Surefire Study Stack (scroll to the bottom)

Studying isn’t what it used to be. Academic competition is fierce, and schools expect a lot more out of their students. Coupled with the economic recession, over 70% of college students are working part time (1), averaging 30 hours per week, while maintaining their studies.

With such limited time, how you study has become nearly as important as what you are studying. In order to maximize your time, energy and focus, many are turning to nootropics.

But what are the best nootropics for studying?

Top 10 Nootropics for Studying

#1: Oxiracetam For Studying

Most degree and diploma programs can be categorized under one of two categories: logical learning or creative thinking.

Those studying economics, mathematics or the sciences would fall under logic based and would benefit from Oxiracetam.

What is it?

Oxiracetam increases left brain functionality, which is responsible for processing logic, analysis and facts, to name a few characteristics.

In effect, oxiracetam would promoting logic-based thinking and help you understand number based concepts easier.

How much Oxiracetam should I take?

The recommended dosage of Oxiracetam ranges between 1200-2400 mg daily. For best results you would split this into three even dosages — for example 400 mg taken 3 times daily.

It is always best to use the smallest dosage to see how it affects your body before increasing it.

How does Oxiracetam work?

Similar to other nootropics in the racetam family it affects both the acetylcholine and cholinergic systems in your brain to improve everything from your attention span and memory to sensory perception. Containing stimulant properties, oxiracetam will also help keep you alert and focused as you study.

#2: Aniracetam For Studying

If you are studying in the field of literature, philosophy or the arts, you would be considered more creative and want to use a nootropic that targeted your right brain functionality.

What is it?

Aniracetam triggers your right brain which is characterized by creativity, imagination, the non-verbal and feelings. When taken, aniracetam reduces stress and anxiety, boosts your mood, and allows ideas to flow more freely, which increases your ability to think abstractly.

How much Aniracetam should I take?

The recommended dosage of Aniracetam varies between 750-1500 mg. Start with the lowest recommended dosage to see how it affects your body and mind first.

It has been noted that taking any less than 750 mg and you will not likely experience any of its effects or benefits.

How does Aniracetam work?

It is not fully known how Aniracetam works, but what studies have found so far is that it helps protect the brain from negative effects of having a lower oxygen supply. It does this by motivating receptors in the brain to take in more oxygen and glucose.

To use aniracetam for studying, stack with Oxiracetam. Together you will experience improved verbal and linguistic functioning, as well as improved sensory perception and logical ability.

#3: L-Theanine For Studying

Struggling to stay focused on the task at hand or even find motivation to study in the first place? L-Theanine can help.

What is it?

L-Theanine is an amino acid that has been found to improve energy levels, while reducing the negative effects of stress. Originally found and isolated from Green Tea in 1949, studies now show that it is an effective aid for enhancing focus and supporting brain health.

How much L-Theanine should I take?

The recommended daily dose of L-theanine is 200 mg, though it is common to find supplement brands on the market with 250 mg dosages.

How does L-Theanine work?

It is easily absorbed into the bloodstream and works by targeting the neurotransmitters responsible for affecting cognitive processes, such as dopamine, serotonin, GABA and norepinephrine — all of which improve focus by putting you in a meditative, relaxed state.

To use L-theanine for studying, many students find it beneficial to couple it with a stimulant like caffeine. Separately these two supplements have their own negative side effects. For example,  some people have found that L-theanine induces too much of a trance-like state, and caffeine alone causes uncomfortable jitter-like side effects. Together these two supplements complement one another nicely, by removing the negative side effects and giving you a clean, controlled focus for studying.

#4: Noopept For Studying

Get the right motivation and focus for studying or preparing for exams with Noopept.

What is it?

Noopept is an incredibly potent nootropic that has a mild psychostimulant effect, allowing you to study with laser focus. It offers similar effects as piracetam, but is a synthetic molecule and not actually a member of the racetam family.

How much Noopept should I take?

The recommended daily dosage for noopept is 10-30 mg. Take once a day and for no longer than 56 days at a time.

Some users recommend cycling Noopept for best results, using it for 1-3 weeks and then taking one month off.

How does Noopept work?

Noopept is absorbed through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where it is then carried to the brain. It’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier with ease means you will experience its effects quickly; as fast as 15-20 minutes after ingestion.

This particular nootropic works by binding to specific receptor sites within the brain to inhibit the breakdown of glutamate. Glutamate is an essential neurotransmitter for healthy cognitive function, so you want to preserve it within the brain for increased focus and processing.

In addition to preserving glutamate, Noopept brings more oxygen to the brain which not only improves your focus, but also elevates your mood.

To use Noopept for studying, take 10-15 mg up to 3 times a day for cram sessions, however you should not exceed 40 mg within a 24 hour period.

#5: Pramiracetam For Studying

The ability to memorize and retain information is crucial, especially when preparing for exams.

What is it?

Pramiracetam is one of the most common nootropics used for improving memory and learning capacity, optimizing brain function, and enhancing your ability to focus. Potent on its own or coupled with others to enhance the effects of other nootropics.

How much Pramiracetam should I take?

The recommended dose of Pramiracetam is 300-600 mg daily, taken once or split into two doses.

It generally works within 30 minutes of ingestion and has a relatively long half-life (4-6 hours), so if splitting doses, it is best to take it in the morning and then again in the early afternoon.

How does Pramiracetam work?

Pramiracetam is a fat-soluble compound that is absorbed into the blood through fatty acids. Unlike most racetams which target specific neurotransmitters, Pramiracetam indirectly causes the release of acetylcholine by increasing high affinity choline uptake. As you may know, choline is a precursor to acetylcholine and responsible for forming long term memories, as well as improving learning speed and concentration.
It does not seem to affect wakefulness or your emotional state, so when it comes to using pramiracetam for studying, you may want to couple it with an energy enhancer like adrafinil or oxiracetam.

#6: Alpha GPC For Studying

One of the best nootropics for improving your memory and enhancing neuroplasticity (ie. being able to understand the material you are studying) is Alpha GPC.

What is it?

Alpha GPC — glycerylphosphorylcholine or choline alfoscerate — is naturally present in our bodies in small quantities, but commercially manufactured in more concentrated doses to enhance your memory and reduce the effects of aging on the brain.

How much Alpha GPC should I take?

The recommended dose of Alpha GPC is 300-600 mg per day, however it is typically tolerated well by most healthy adults so the dosage range can widen.

It has been found that taking between 300-1200 mg in one dose or split into two can be safe and effective. If you have never tried it before start at the lowest dosage and increase as deemed necessary over time.

How does Alpha GPC work?

Alpha GPC’s structure naturally contains glycerol, phosphate and choline and is used by the body to store choline. It is water soluble and fast acting, meaning it crosses the blood-brain barrier with ease and users can feel the effects within an hour of ingesting it.

After it has been absorbed and metabolized, the byproduct is a combination of choline and glycerophosphate, but its the additional choline that makes this nootropic so effective. As we’ve mentioned before, choline is essential for memory function and recall, as well as a whole host of other cognitive functions like concentration, focus and learning ability.

When stacked with other nootropics, specifically those in the racetam family, it can make Alpha GPC for studying even more beneficial.

#7: Adrafinil For Studying

If your morning cup of coffee just isn’t cutting it during study sessions then Adrafinil could help.

What is it?

Adrafinil — also known as Olmifon — is a nootropic compound typically used for its eugeroic effects. In other words, it is a wakefulness promoting supplement or stimulant.

How much Adrafinil should I take?

The recommended daily dose of Adrafinil is 150-300 mg. It is one of the more potent nootropics out there so it’s always best to start at the lowest dosage and give your body time to adjust before increasing.

Cycling is also recommended. Try two weeks on, one week off, then go to one week on and two weeks off.

This is not recommended for anyone who has issues with their liver as Adrafinil has been found to elevate certain enzymes which can actually cause liver damage.

How does Adrafinil work?

Adrafinil mimics the same response your body experiences during “fight or flight” mode. Though it is not completely understood how, it is believed that this nootropic increases the levels of Hypocretin — a neuropeptide that regulates wakefulness as well as arousal and appetite.

It also affects your body’s levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and histamine, which all affect how alert you feel.

To use Adrafinil for studying, stack with other nootropics including Sulbutiamine, Alpha GPC or Noopept for even more energy and alertness, plus improved attentiveness, memory and mental performance.

#8: Bacopa Monniera For Studying

When it comes to studying you likely want a nootropic for improving your alertness and making studying easier – like Bacopa Monniera.

What is it?

Bacopa Monniera is a natural nootropic that comes from the Ayurvedic herb water hyssop, and is used for its anti-fatigue properties and ability to improve alertness and wakefulness.

How much Bacopa Monniera should I take?

The recommended dose is 300 mg per day as long as the total active compound makes up 55% of the supplement by weight.

If taken in leaf or powder form, the recommended dose is 750-1500 mg.

It should be noted that if taken on its own, this nootropic takes several weeks to see improvements, as many as 8-12 weeks in fact. However, if you want to use bacopa monniera for studying and reap its benefits then you should stack it with phenylpiracetam, piracetam or one of the other racetams depending on your desired outcome (ie. physical energy, cognitive stimulation or reduced anxiety).

How does Bacopa Monniera work?

Bacopa Monniera improves synaptic communication by enhancing the growth of dendrites (brancehd nerve cell extensions) through which neural impulses travel. The better your neural impulse travel, the better your cognitive functioning and alertness.

The active ingredient in this nootropic is Bacoside-A and is known for its ability to stimulate nerve cells, making synapses more welcoming to nerve impulses.

#9: Phenibut For Studying

Studying doesn’t come without a certain level of stress and anxiety, whether that be related to the act of studying or the outcome. To reduce your stress levels while studying or writing exams, test out Phenibut.

What is it?

Phenibut is a commonly used GABA-derivative nootropic that helps rid you of anxiety and improve your quality of sleep. Most often stacked with others for its mood boosting, stress-reducing qualities.

How much Phenibut should I take?

The recommended daily dosage of Phenibut is anywhere between 250-1000 mg. If you are a new user then you should start at the lowest possible dosage and allow your body time to adjust before increasing the amount taken.

Highly effective, you do not want to take multiple doses as you should feel the effects of this nootropic all day long with just one dose.

How does Phenibut work?

Phenibut is a derivative of the neurotransmitter GABA. GABA is responsible for reducing activity in the neurons that it binds to, leading to a calming, stress-reducing effect.

Unlike GABA which cannot pass the blood brain barrier when taken in supplement form, Phenibut contains an additional phenyl ring molecule which allows it to cross this barrier with ease. There it binds to GABA receptors and lowers the level of excitatory action in the brain.

To use Phenibut for studying, stack with Noopept for the ultimate memory boosting, cognition improving, increased wakefulness, but with a calm, anxiety-free effect.

#10: Picamilon For Studying

Looking for another anti-anxiety nootropic for studying? Try Picamilon.

What is it?

Picamilon, also known as nicotinyl-gamma-Aminobutyric acid, is another GABA-derivative nootropic, commonly used by college students to reduce anxiety and stress. It is considered very safe and has been well researched, and boasts very few (if any) negative side effects.

How much Picamilon should I take?

The recommended daily dosage of Picamilon is 50-300 mg. Most brands on the market it sell it in a 150 mg capsule, but you can also buy it in powder form and measure it out yourself.

For best effects, many users prefer to split their dosage in two, taking one in the morning and another in the evening. Like most other nootropics, start with a lower dosage and increase over time as you deem necessary.

How does Picamilon work?

Picamilon contains two natural anti-anxiety chemicals, GABA and niacin. As it passes through the blood brain barrier these two chemicals separate through a hydrolytic reaction.

From there, GABA targets receptors in the central nervous system producing an anxiolytic response (ie. an anti-anxiety response) by preventing neuronal over-stimulation in your brain.

Niacin, on the other hand, dilates blood vessels in your brain resulting in more oxygen to the brain, improved cerebral blood flow and increased glucose metabolism. In essence it improves the health of your brain neurons.

To benefit from Picamilon for studying, stack it with racetams like Piracetam or Aniracetam for a more positive and effective studying session.

The Ultimate Nootropic Stack For Studying

This stack is most effective when taken before an exam for study purposes or during exams as well. I wouldn’t recommend taking it daily as you’ll start to see a lesser effect over time.

Aniracetam

Dosage: 1500mg

Benefits: Consider this as the “mood enhancer” in the stack as it has a direct impact on increasing dopamine levels. It has a rather nice anxiolytic effect which will help reduce unwanted stress during exams or in the lead up to them.

Oxiracetam

Dosage: 750mg

Benefits: Oxiracetam can be considered a mild stimulant when compared to aniracetam. It’s basically a powerful antioxidant, helping to remove excess toxins like calcium, which can lead to a drop in memory function in the brain.

Noopept

Dosage: 10-20mg

Benefits: Noopept is regarded as one of the most well known nootropics on the market today. It aids in improving cognitive and learning functions much like most racetams, however with a faster absorption rate.

The Best Premade Studying Stack

CILTEP By Natural Stacks

Dosage: 2 capsules in the morning (stop on weekends)

Benefits: CILTEP is your all out performance enhancer. It contains 3 main components: artichoke extract (900mg) for learning and memory, ALCAR (750mg) for combatting brain fatigue and LPhenylalanine (500mg) to help increase dopamine metabolism.

Alpha Brain Review

Shop Now On Onnit.com

Alpha Brain is a potent nootropic blend of some of nature’s most potent dietary supplements for improving focus, memory and brainwave optimization.

Backed by two randomized clinical trials, both of which show positive results, Onnit Alpha Brain has been proven to help your verbal memory (like recalling names or places), process speed and find your flow state with more reliability.

I have to admit I was still a bit skeptical about it even after watching the clinical trial video, so I decided to dig a little deeper and learn even more about this brain optimizing nootropic.

Alpha Brain Ingredients

Typically I would start this Alpha Brain review by diving directly into how it works, but in this case I wanted to touch on some of its key ingredients as they play an integral role in the individual functionality of this nootropic.

Onnit lists four key ingredients on their website, in addition to several other secondary ingredients. Unlike many other nootropic manufacturers, this company is happy to divulge exactly what they put in their products.

Let’s talk about the four key ingredients first:

Bacopa Monniera, also known as water hyssop, is an ayurvedic herb used to improve cognition by reducing the user’s anxiety, thus making it an adaptogen. Adaptogens are compounds that prevent the physical and chemical responses we experience during times of stress. While it may improve memory formation for some, if used on its own, others may feel too relaxed to work and experience demotivated instead.

Cat’s Claw is a wild vine found in the Amazon forest, and its use dates back to the Incas. Historically it has been used as a form of contraception, to reduce inflammation, prevent cancer, as well as to boost the immune system. In this instance, it is used for its beneficial antioxidants and immune boosting properties.

But Alpha Brain doesn’t use any old cat’s claw. The manufacturers have created a proprietary blend known as AC-11 which not only contains the cat’s claw bark component, Uncaria Tomentosa, but a new class of compounds called Carboxyl Alkyl Esters (CAE). This is done through a hot water extraction process that uses molecular sieving technology.

Huperzia Serrata, also known as firmoss, is a plant extract that naturally inhibits the production of acetylcholinesterase (AchE). AchE breaks down acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter found in the autonomic, central and peripheral nervous systems. Acetylcholine, depending on its location, can stimulate muscle movement, and effect learning and short-term memory. It is broken down by AchE, so the inclusion of huperzia serrata in Alpha Brain is important for maintaining higher levels of memory boosting acetylcholine by preventing the AchE from doing its job.

Oat Straw, or Avena sativa, is an extract used for its positive impact on your brains cognition. Studies show that when healthy subjects were given concentrated oat straw and then asked to perform tasks geared towards concentration or mental arithmetic, their cognitive performance was higher than those who only took a placebo.

The takeaway here though, is that subjects must be healthy in order to see any sort of results from this ingredient.

Some of the other ingredients found in Alpha Brain include:

  • L-Tyrosine — an amino acid precursor used for increasing the production of L-Dopa, which helps combat anxiety and improve mood
  • L-Theanine — for helping your body absorb Alpha Brain into your body easier and maintaining its balance
  • Phosphatidylserine — a fat-soluble amino acid derivative compound that contributes to cognitive functioning
  • Pterostilbene — an antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress
  • Vitamin B6 — helps with the synthesis of the amino acids and neurotransmitters found in this stack to help improve brain functionality

Now that we know what we’re working with here, let’s talk about what this product can or cannot do for you.

Does Alpha Brain Work?

Like most nootropics on the market, whether or not the product works is very subjective and depends on your body and lifestyle.

How you ingest Alpha Brain can affect its effectiveness. As I mentioned above, one of the top four key ingredients is Bacopa Monniera. It is fat-soluble, so for it to be properly absorbed into your body requires it to be ingested with a fat source. Onnit does prescribe taking Alpha Brain with a light meal though. On an empty stomach, you are not likely to absorb enough of the compound to experience a difference.

After reading the Ingredient section above, you can see how each ingredient included is meant to compliment another. For starters, L-theanine makes the blood-brain barrier easier to permeate, making it easier for essential antioxidants, amino acids and neurotransmitters to perform their duties.

Several of the ingredients, including bacopa monniera, L-tyrosine and pterostilbene reduce your natural reaction to cognitive and bodily stress that can reduce focus, memory and performance. Coupled with huperzia serrata’s AchE inhibitors, your body can help maintain or increase its acetylcholine levels and therefore improve your ability to learn or memorize things. And so the cycle continues.

What’s important to note is that much of Alpha Brain’s functionality relies on ingredients that increase your body’s production of acetylcholine and reduces stress and anxiety that may wear on your cognitive performance. Most of these symptoms are a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.

For example, if you do not get a decent amount of sleep, are stressed, overworked and make poor diet choices, you are more likely to reap the benefits of this product. Unfortunately, a large portion of the population fits into this category, so if you nodded your head ‘yes’ to any one of the symptoms listed above, then you will likely benefit from taking this.

On the other hand, If you are an individual who maintains a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, protein and healthy fats, exercises regularly and gets adequate amounts of sleep then your body most likely produces enough choline on its own. In short, you may not notice the effects of Alpha Brain at all.

Benefits of Using Alpha Brain

This particular nootropic stack contains many different compounds found in nature that can deliver a wide range of benefits. Some of the most well documented benefits include:

Improved Learnability and Memory — Acetylcholine is responsible for improving overall memory and this stack includes several ingredients that work towards increasing its production, and increasing neuroplasticity making it easier for your brain to form neural pathways and synapses. Simply put, making it easier to absorb and retain new information.

Increased Focus and Cognitive Performance — Thanks to the inclusion of several antioxidants and amino acid rich ingredients, Alpha Brain helps your  brain get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to help you focus harder and perform better.

Better Sleep and More Lucid Dreams — Perhaps one of the greatest benefits noted by users is their improved sleep quality and their ability to have much more lucid dreams. Several of the ingredients of Alpha brain work to reduce stress and anxiety on your body and mind. As you can imagine this would greatly improve your ability to sleep.

As far as dream lucidity goes, this refers to your ability to ‘control’ your thoughts and movements while in a dreamlike state. Lucid dreaming leads to a whole new host of benefits including improved creativity, exploration of your conscious and self-realization, as well as lead to healing of the mind and body.

Is Alpha Brain Safe?

This is a fair question considering the whole premise behind nootropics is to alter your brain chemistry in some form or another.

Most of the ingredients in Alpha Brain are natural and therefore considered safe by the FDA. For example, vitamin B6, Alpha GPC, Phosphatidylserine, Bacopa Monniera, L-tyrosine, L-theanine and oat straw are all considered incredibly safe, as they have low enough dosages and tend to have a lot of scientific research backing their safety.

A few lesser known ingredients do not have as much research, but likely offer no true negative side effects.

There is approximately 40mg of Huperzia serrata in Alpha Brain which is double the daily recommended dose. This could also be the cause of dream lucidity.

The level of Vinpocetine is not considered dangerous, however if you combine Alpha Brain with other nootropics, it may affect individuals who have low blood pressure.

While there tends to not to be many negative side effects, some users with higher than average acetylcholine levels may experience headaches or restlessness. They might also notice pressure or pain around their jaw as a result of excess neurotransmitters. If you experience either of these symptoms, you may want to reconsider using this product.

Another potential side effect that some customers have found is that their dreams are so lucid it becomes uncomfortable and actually increases their anxiety levels. If this is the case, I would definitely suggest adjusting your dosage or to stop using it all together.

Alpha Brain Dosage

Both on the bottle and the Onnit website you can find the recommended daily dosage and suggested use.

The recommended daily alpha brain dosage for improving mental performance is 2 capsules in the morning or early afternoon. It is recommended that you take these capsules with a light meal, and we highly suggest one that contains healthy fats, so it is absorbed easier.

If you are using Alpha Brain to achieve more lucid dreams then they recommend taking your two capsules 4-6 hours prior to bed.

Consumers should not take more than 3 capsules in a 24 hour period so be mindful of when you take your dosage. As always, it is best to consult with your physician before starting Alpha Brain, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have any medical conditions or are taking any other medications.

Alpha Brain Studies

Most nootropic companies do not invest much time in researching their own products and rely instead on marketing. This is not the case with Onnit.

Alpha Brain underwent two double blind clinical trials with significant findings. For example, those who took Alpha Brain versus a placebo experienced a 12% greater improvement in verbal recall, and 21% were able to plan or memorize things faster, as well as display improved mental flexibility (ability to think about multiple concepts at the same time).

It was also found that those who took it were able to achieve peak alpha (aka. Flow state) easier than those who took a placebo.

You can view the original studies here.

How Does Alpha Brain Stack Up Against Others, Like Ciltep?

Alpha Brain is one of the most popular brain enhancing nootropics on the market today, and even has several celebrity endorsements and of course, clinical research to back it up.

CILTEPBut how does this stack up against other brain enhancing products like Natural Stacks’ CILTEP?

CILTEP is a dietary supplement designed to improve focus, motivation and memory by inducing long term potentiation (LTP) in neurons. In layman's terms, this is to be one by increasing the activity in neural pathways, making it easier for your brain to take in more information.

Like Alpha Brain, CILTEP contains natural ingredients, but its nootropic core is based on coleus forskohlii and artichoke extract, whereas Alpha Brains is in its AC-11, Onnit Flow Blend and the Onnit Focus Blend. Though varying makeups, there is little evidence that either products make up is truly more beneficial than the other.

When both products ingredient dosages are broken down further, it can give you great insight into how beneficial the product can actually be. For example, CILTEP contains P-5-P, which is superior to Alpha Brain’s vitamin B6, but CILTEP's acetyl-l-carnitine dosage is not high enough to have any real effect on the brain.

On the flip side, the amount of vinpocetine in Alpha Brain (or lack thereof) doesn’t offer many benefits either. It would appear that both products individual ingredient dosages are somewhat hit or miss.

While both are good in their own right, consumers have found their benefits to be quite varying. If you are looking for a supplement that is more likely to improve your focus and alertness then CILTEP is probably best for you.

On the other hand, if you are looking for something that will improve your ability to recall names of people or places, and ultimately memorize new information then Alpha Brain is for you.

Final Thoughts

As I said earlier, I was quite skeptical before writing this Alpha Brain review. I will say I am quite impressed with what it has to offer though.

In terms of ingredients, the fact that it is designed with so many natural ingredients is nice and when you dive deeper into it, you can really see how each ingredient feeds off the others and makes the product work.

There is little to no risk for negative side effects, which is a big plus when you consider that nootropics are designed to alter your brain chemistry.

And the evidence from clinical studies doesn’t hurt either.

Though I will admit they could have used a larger sample size, the results were positive and most of the consumers I have spoken to have enjoyed many of the benefits, whether they be enjoying more lucid dreams or their ability to retain more information faster.

Here's how I scored Alpha Brain…

DMAE: A Power Packed Nootropic Supplement

DMAE: A Power Packed Nootropic Supplement

DMAE: The Ultimate Guide

Shop Now from AbsorbYourHealth.com

Dimethylaminoethanol, or DMAE for short, is an natural chemical compound that's produced in the brain naturally and can also be found in fish like salmon and sardines.

No wonder they call fish a brain food.

So, DMAE is an amino acid and there are several different jobs it has throughout the body.

When it comes to nootropics, it's directly related to Choline, but because of a somewhat different chemical design it can cross into the brain much easier.

It’s also considered a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is responsible for all kinds of cognitive functions.

Basically acetylcholine boosts up your brain for things like memory and learning new things.

More on that subject later on.

The biggest reason why people seem to chose DMAE is because it has more of an obvious boost in cognitive functions.

There even a lot of people who take DMAE because of its natural powers in fighting off old age by promoting healthy skin, building up muscle tone and decreasing sagging.

But that's for a whole other post later on down the road.

Anyway, let’s take a quick look at how DMAE does it’s thing in your brain.

How DMAE Works

Like I mentioned at the top, DMAE and Choline are very similar, but what makes them different is their basic designs.

The difference between the two is that DMAE only has 2 methyl molecules connected to its nitrogen molecule while Choline has 3 that are attached.

Let me explain just a little bit here.

Because DMAE only has 2 methyl molecules it can get across the blood-brain barrier a lot easier than many other Choline supplements.

So, as soon as DMAE makes its way into brain cells, it's transformed into Acetylcholine.

This is where the good stuff starts to happen.

Acetylcholine is a chemical that is a highly effective neurotransmitter which has an essential part in many mental functions like forming memory, focus, and learning new things.

It  is recognized as probably the most essential neurotransmitters for any development of new connections among neurons as well as plasticity in the brain.

Researchers believe that as much as 90% of the population are viewed as lacking when it comes to the nutritional requirements necessary to make acetylcholine.

It is also thought that this amount could be even higher in elderly people.

So, are you getting enough of the right stuff to make Acetylcholine naturally?

Anyway, let’s keep moving…

Using acetylcholine supplements are frequently needed to make sure you have the best brain functions you possibly can.

DMAE is among the best options out there for boosting levels of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine.

Centrophenoxine, which happens to be created from DMAE, is known to be much more potent and is used in repairing brain damage for some stroke patients.

DMAE can join to phospholipids inside brain and because of this ability it helps a lot of the supplement get included into the neural walls that exist in the brain.

What does that do for you exactly?

This action is thought to be in charge of acting like antioxidant in addition to helping boost brain and neural health.

DMAE also helps to boost the fluidity and absorbing power of the nerve membranes, so that they can get all the essential nutrition taken in and get rid of waste.

Cell membrane fluidity is slowed down as we get older, but DMAE might be able to change or stop these signs of maturing from happening.

Now that you have an idea of how it works we can jump into the benefits.

DMAE Benefits

The research on DMAE shows that it can boost neural functions along with positive effects on intelligence.

This is likely because of the fact that DMAE speeds up the fusion of acetylcholine inside the brain.

As I already mentioned, Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that neurons use to communicate when making and recalling memories as well as a bunch of other neural processes.

Increased amounts of acetylcholine can cause better clarity of thought, memory retention, focus, and analytical skills.

Anyway, let’s get on to the specific benefits of DMAE

Memory Enhancement:

The most typical user of DMAE says that they feel improved memory, concentration and mental functionality.

Research done by Duke University in 1995 found that when rats were given DMAE proved upgrades in working memory effectiveness.

Mood Elevation:

Even though it hasn't been clinically proven, there are plenty of reports that taking DMAE can treat some symptoms of depression. A 2003 study had an optimistic result for people identified as having “emotional borderline disturbance”.

DMAE is additionally believed to help lessen levels of anxiety, give an energy boost, and increase vitality.

Lucid Dreaming:

A fairly unique benefit of DMAE is that it will generate lucid a dreaming state while you sleep.

In a lucid dreaming state, you know that you're really dreaming but you're able to control what's going on in the dream.

Lucid dreaming is known to improve creativity and problem solving, as well as help in boosting mood.

Some people tend to think it's useful for athletic training or any other task that needs extreme concentration and focus.

ADHD:

Several studies from the 1970's have shown that those with ADD/ADHD have found that DMAE has been able to increase focus and lower impulse control issues.

Dosage for DMAE

Simply because everyone have a different body chemistry there is a wide range of doses that can be taken with DMAE.

DMAE is generally dosed between 25 mg and going all the way up to 750 mg and are taken twice a day.

It's a good idea to assess the effects and figure out what is going to be the best dosage for your body chemistry.

It’s a Nootropic that you are going to get more “bang for your buck” when you use less.

What I am trying to say is usually using smaller dosages are going to the effects you are looking for as opposed to taking huge amounts.

When you decide to get started using DMAE it is a good idea to start of with a dose of less the 100 mg for the first week or so.

By doing this you are going to give your body a shot getting adjusted to it and you'll be able to get a good idea of the effects it has.

So, how much should you take once you get adjusted?

A lot of people end up using a dose of around 100 to 300 mg a day after their body has adjusted to DMAE.

So, that would be 50 to 150 mg twice a day.

Like many Nootropics, it is important to know that you should not rush into it.

Take time to make sure you find the right dosage for you.

Also, I got to tell you that there have been reports where people who take 1200 mg a day or more can end up with depression like symptoms.

But, after lowering the dosage down to around 50 mg these symptoms will lessen and should be gone in a few days.

If you stack DMAE with other Nootropics there is most likely going to be a solid boost in each of the ingredients effects.

So, even if you have been using DMAE for a while you might want to bring down the dosage at least at in the beginning of using it in a stack.

Before you rush out and start using DMAE we have to talk about side effects first.

Safety and Side Effects for DMAE

It’s time to go over some important info about DMAE, so make sure you are paying attention.

Ok, first off when you take DMAE at the recommended doses side effects are not common.

But this does not mean they can’t or won’t happen.

So, with that being said, some of possible side effects are:

  • gastrointestinal problems
  • drowsiness
  • body odor
  • confusion
  • increased blood pressure
  • irritability

Overdosing with DMAE is considered difficult because of the low toxicity and wide range of safe dosage.

You should also know that people who are prone to depression, schizophrenic, pregnant,or lactating should not use DMAE.

Your best bet is to talk with a doctor before using this or any supplement no matter how good your health is.

Ok now all that stuff is out of the way, let’s about where to get DMAE.

Where To Buy DMAE

You can get DMAE at a lot of health food stores, GNC, or even amazon, but many DMAE supplements are market for antiaging and not for cognitive function.

I guess that really doesn’t matter, but if you are going to spend your hard earned cash why not really get something out of it?

But, I would really suggest buying one of the more researched nootropics like Centrophenoxine.

I say this because the effects are similar, but it is much more potent and effective.

Check out AbsorbYourHealth.com if you decide to pick some up or are looking for the best nootropics online.

Ok, what’s next?

Let’s talk about stacking DMAE!

The DMEA and Piracetam Stack

The concept driving the Piracetam and DMAE stack would be that the choline in DMAE can result in increased amounts of acetylcholine to ensure that Piracetam’s effects are even stronger.

Just like when cranking up the grill you need charcoal, the fuel, and lighter fluid, the propellant to get it burning quickly. Without the fuel, like charcoal, to keep it going the fire simply won't last.

Basically, when you combine them, you're supplying Piracetam more fuel to keep it going.

Since there are some legit doubts about how useful DMAE is, most neuroscience studies have concentrated much more on the results of Centrophenoxine which is actually a DMAE offshoot that has a lot more potency.

Tons of studies and user feedback validate the strength of Centrophenoxine, specially when it's put together with Piracetam.

If you decide to use a DMAE and Piracetam stack and aren't satisfied with the results, you might want to step up to a Centrophenoxine and Piracetam stack.

When dosing the Piracetam and DMAE stack using a10:1 dosage portion ratio is recommended.

So, with 2000 mg of Piracetam you'd want to add 200 mg of DMAE. Some people go so far as to use a 20 to 1 ratio because they feel it works better.

Now, there's much less proof that supports DMAE over other nootropics, but many people rely on its capability to boost focus and mood.

Basically  the results are going to differ for every person.

Some common alternatives to a DMAE and Piracetam stack, could be using supplements like CDP Choline, Alpha GPC or Hydergine.

Ahead of building your very own stack, take a look at each of the options to see what might work best for you.

Overall DMAE is a safe nootropic supplement because of its minimal side effects, low toxicity and wide range of safe doses.

DMAE benefits are pretty solid, but depending on individual body chemistry the effects can very.

If you happen to give DMAE a shot and it doesn’t do what you need it to do, there are plenty of alternatives out there that have plenty of solid reviews and research behind them.

Centrophenoxine is probably the best option as an alternative, but Alpha GPC and CDP Choline are the most well known and liked.

Just remember to start slow and work your way up to get the most out of DMAE.
